Biography


Dr Tim Soutphommasane
is a political theorist/philosopher and commentator. 


A research fellow at Monash University's National Centre for Australian Studies and a senior project leader at the Per Capita think tank, Tim is a columnist with The Age newspaper in Melbourne.
Since August 2011 he has been a member of the Australian Multicultural Council, which advises the Australian Government on multicultural issues.

Tim is author of the forthcoming book The Virtuous Citizen (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and is also writing a book about Australian multiculturalism, which will be published by New South Books/UNSW Press in 2012. His other publications include
Reclaiming Patriotism: Nation-Building for Australian Progressives (Cambridge University Press, 2009), which was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Literary Awards in 2010, and All That's Left: What Labor Should Stand For, edited with Nick Dyrenfurth (New South Books/UNSW Press, 2010).

As part of his research at Monash University, Tim is a Chief Investigator on an Australian Research Council project studying the history of Anzac Day.

Tim has written widely for the British and Australian press. From 2009-11 he wrote the 'Ask the Philosopher' column in The Weekend Australian, which explored politics and society and culture from a philosophical perspective. Tim has also worked as a leader-writer for The Financial Times and The Guardian. His work has appeared in The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian Financial Review, The Canberra Times, The Courier-Mail, The Monthly, The Australian Literary Review and The Spectator. His work and commentary has also featured on radio (ABC Radio National, ABC Local) and television (ABC1, Sky, ABC News 24).


Of Chinese and Lao extraction, and a first-generation Australian, Tim was raised in the southwest suburbs of Sydney. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy in political theory at the University of Oxford, from where he also holds a Master of Philosophy degree (with distinction). Tim studied at Oxford as Commonwealth and Jowett Senior Scholar at Balliol College. He is a first-class honours graduate of the University of Sydney.

Tim is also a keen follower of cricket, and once captained the Balliol College First XI.
